The demands growth quickly, market lacks of aluminum cans before 2025
Once supplies were restored, can demand growth quickly resumed the previous trend of 2 to 3 per cent a year, with the full year 2020 volume matching 2019’s despite a modest 1 per cent decline in ‘on-trade’ business. While the growth of soft drink consumption slowed, canned beer has benefitted from at-home consumption and is now a major factor in growth.
Covid has accelerated the long-term trend in favour of cans to the detriment of glass bottles, which are primarily used in restaurants. Cans have a share of about 25 per cent of the packaged drinks in China, leaving it plenty of room to catch up with the 50 per cent of other countries.
Another trend is the online purchasing of canned products, which is growing fast
to account for 7 to 8 per cent of the total canned beverage market.
Within this is new business for digitally-printed personalised cans that are offered, ordered and delivered through the internet. This enables
small numbers of cans for short-run promotions, and special events like weddings, exhibitions and football club victory celebrations.
Canned beer in the USA accounted for 50% of all beer sales, markets lack of beverage cans.
It is reported that some American beer producers such as MolsonCoors, Brooklyn Brewery and Karl Strauss have begun to reduce the beer brands on sale to deal with the crisis of the shortage of aluminum cans.
Adam Collins, a spokesperson for MolsonCoors, said that due to the shortage of cans, they removed smaller and slower-growing brands from their product portfolio.
Affected by the epidemic, liquor originally sold in restaurants and bars has now been diverted to retail stores and online channels for sales. Products are usually canned under this sales model.
However, long before the epidemic, the demand for cans by brewers was already very strong. More and more manufacturers are turning to canned containers. Data shows that canned beer in the United States accounted for 50% of all beer sales in 2019. That number increased to 60% in the year.
